Connecting MacPPP to the CIA V1.0

If you have the CIA install software, please install it first. If you are running MacOS System 8, please go here for installation instructions.

Following are the instructions for connecting to the CIA's network using FreePPP and MacTCP. This document assumes

FreePPP can be found in the "/comm/tcp/conn" directory of the Info-Mac archive. You will need a program like StuffIt Expander to decode it. StuffIt Expander is available from ftp://ftp.aladdinsys.com//pub/StuffIt_Expander_3.5.2.bin

Do not keep more that one copy of the PPP extension (be it FreePPP's or one of the MacPPP derivatives) on your hard drive at the same time. Multiple copies or multiple versions use some similar resource files and may cause a conflict in extensions. Also, if you have InterSLIP installed, you might want to remove it also to prevent and possible conflicts.

First, we need to move the two necessary PPP files to the appropriate places. This is done by the following steps:

  1. Place the control panel ConfigPPP
    into your Control Panels folder
  2. Place the extension PPP into your
    Extensions folder
The easiest method to accomplish these two steps
is to drag both the control panel and the extension
onto the closed icon of your System Folder.
Your Macintosh will then ask if you want to put
the files where they belong. Click OK.

Open MacTCP (inside the Control Panels window). This window should open:

Highlight the PPP icon. If the Icon is not present, and you have followed to above installation instructions, try rebooting your Mac.

To proceed, click on the button marked More...
